ABSTRACT

Background:

Today, LASIK is a common refractive surgery method with accuracy, high safety and acceptable cost. Creating the corneal flap and removing partially of stroma will lead to change the corneal structure after surgery. In the past, to study these changes, we used many types of equipment to collect patient data in preoperative and follow-up in postoperative, but now Pentacam can support to collect almost data needed, especially measuring the corneal densitometry - the transparent of the cornea.

Subjects and Methods:

A longitudinal prospective study on 114 eyes, follow-up 6 months postoperative. Patients were from Ophthalmology department at An Sinh Hospital during the period from August, 2015 to December, 2015.

Results:

The central corneal thickness (CCT) is stable after 1 month surgery and CCT after 6 months is thicker 7-10µm than expected. Postoperative flap thickness (120.23 ± 6.21µm is thicker than expected (113.33 ± 7,49µm). The thinnest point of the cornea tends to move from ½ inferior cornea to nearly central cornea in postoperative. The anterior curvature of cornea decreases while the posterior curvature does not change in postoperative. The corneal densitometry of the central 0-2mm is unchangeable in preoperative as well as postoperative (13.75 ± 1.84, 13.84 ± 1.08; p = 0.6432), the peripheral increases 1.29 ± 1.58GSU (p= 0.0000). 6-10mm area increases from 11.35 ± 1.53 to 12.64 ± 0.98 (p=0.0000), 10-12mm area increases from 21.03 ± 5.50 to 28.31 ± 11.87 (p=0.0000). The endothelial cells do not change after surgery. The depth of anterior chamber reduces 0.02 ± 0.04 mm (p=0.0000).

Conclusion:

Pentacam can measure most of necessary parameters for preoperative examination as well as monitoring patients after LASIK.
